    Let \(C \subset \mathbb {P}^n\), \(n:= d-g\), be a linearly normal embedding by a degree \(d\) line bundle \(L\) of a smooth genus \(g\) curve and \(\Sigma _k\), \(k \geq 1\), its \(k\)-secant variety, \(\Sigma _1\) being the usual secant variety. Here the author proves that if \(d \geq 2g+3\), then \(\Sigma _1\) is \(5\)-regular and that if \(L\) is general, then \(\Sigma _1\) is projectively normal. He shows the sharpness of his theorem and conjectures that if \(d \geq 2g+1+2k\), then \(\mathcal {I}_{\Sigma _k}\) is \((2k+3)\)-regular and \(\Sigma _k\) is projectively normal. He also conjectures that if \(d \geq 2g+1+2k+p\), \(p \geq 0\), then \(\Sigma _k\) satisfies \(N_{k+2,p}\).
