In this elegant paper, after an interesting discussion on different types of supermanifolds, the authors present first the four axioms of the theory of \(R^{\infty}\)-supermanifolds over ``Arens-Michael algebras of Grassmann origin'' which include several types of supermanifolds: Berezin-Leites-Kostant's graded manifolds, Rogers' \(G^{\infty}\)-supermanifolds, Rothstein's \(R\)-supermanifolds, etc. Then they construct in this category the operator of ``super \(D\)-differentiation'' whose existence will automatically provide super Lie differentiation and super covariant differentiation (as does the \(D\)-differentiation for the Lie differentiation \(\mathcal L\) and covariant differentiation \(\nabla\) for the case of ordinary differential geometry) thus showing that \(R^{\infty}\)-supermanifolds are rich enough to support a considerable amount of structure. Their construction is presented in the local case and also only on vectors, as the similar results on tensors will be presented elsewhere. First, they construct (axiomatically) ``arbitrary \(\mu\)-mappings'', they explain why these may be considered as being next in simplicity after linear mappings and give some of their properties. Next, they restrict to the case of ``generalisable \(\mu\)-mappings'' and give both the local expression of the (uniquely determined) operator \(D\) with respect to a basis (Theorem 1) and the way the coefficients in its formula transform (Theorem 2). Some examples allow them to conclude that super Lie and super covariant differentiation are indeed contained in super \(D\)-differentiation as special cases. Several developments are also announced.
