The paper deals with the general operator equation \[ Au=f , \;\;u \in U , \;\;f \in F, \] where \(U\), \(F\) are Banach spaces, \(B[U,F]\) is the corresponding space of bounded linear operators, \(A \in B[U,F]\). The projection regularization method is used to get a stable approximate solution of the ill-posed problem under study. The order-optimality of the considered method is proved under general assumptions on the well-posedness class. The obtained results are applied to solve an inverse Stefan problem playing an important role in metallurgy, namely, in the simulation of a secondary cooling zone in casting-rolling units.
