This work studies the relative Nielsen number for certain pairs of solvmanifolds. Given a map of pairs \(F:(X,A) \to (X,A)\), \textit{H. Schirmer} introduced in [Pac. J. Math. 122, 459--473 (1986; Zbl 0553.55001)] a number \(N(F;X,A)\) which is a lower bound for the number of fixed points of all maps \(G\) homotopic to \(F\) relative to \(A\). There is a formula which relates this new number, called in this work Schirmer number, to the classical Nielsen number, namely: \[ N(F;X,A)=N(F)+N(f)-N(F,f). \] The map \(f\) is the restriction of \(F\) to \(A\) and \(N(F,f)\) is the number of essential common fixed point classes. Many computations has been done where often we have \(N(F;X,A)=max\{N(F),N(f)\}\). The cases where this equality does not hold are quite interesting from the viewpoint of the Schirmer number. The paper under review computes the Schirmer number for certain maps between a pair of model solvmanifolds. It uses the results obtained by \textit{P. R. Heath} and \textit{E. C. Keppelmann} [Quaest. Math. 25, No.~4, 483--501 (2002; Zbl 1035.55002)] in the absolute case for such solvmanifolds. The main result of the paper is Theorem 4.5 where one has a formula for the Schirmer number for \(F\) a diagonal selfmap of a pair \((S,s)\) of model solvmanifolds. The statement is too long and involves too much notation to be stated here. Then in Corollary 4.4 one obtains under which conditions the inequality \(N(F;S,s)> max\{N(F),N(f)\}\) holds. The paper is well organized and contains a nice exposition of fixed point theory and known results relevant to the work.
