The authors characterize boundedness and compactness of the composition operator \(C_\varphi(f)= f\circ \varphi\) acting from \(\alpha\)-Bloch spaces defined on the unit ball of \({\mathbb C}^n\), extending the results by \textit{S.\,Ohno, K.\,Stroethoff} and \textit{R.\,Zhao} [Rocky Mt.\ J.\ Math.\ 33, No.\,1, 191--215 (2003; Zbl 1042.47018)] to higher dimensions. Recall that \({\mathcal B}^\alpha\) consist of holomorphic functions such that \(\| f\| _{1,\alpha}=| f(0)| +\sup_{z\in B} (1-| z| ^2)^\alpha | \nabla f(z)| <\infty\). For \(\alpha=1\) this norm is known due to \textit{R.\,Timoney} [Bull.\ Lond.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 12, 241--267 (1980; Zbl 0416.32010)] to be equivalent to \(\| \cdot\| _{2,1}\) where the gradient is replaced by the radial derivative or to \(\| f\| _{3,1}= \sup\{ H_z(u,u)^{-1/2}| \nabla f(z) u| : z\in B\), \(u\neq 0\}\), where \(H_z(u,u)\) is the Bergman metric. The authors consider the Finsler metric to get some equivalent norm in the space \({\mathcal B}^\alpha\) (recovering Timoney's result for \(\alpha=1\)) and use this equivalent formulation to get the necessary and sufficient condition for the boundedness of \(C_\varphi\) from \({\mathcal B}^\alpha\) to \({\mathcal B}^\beta\). As expected, the corresponding ``little o'' condition is shown to characterize the compactness of the composition operator.
