Recall that the complex Banach space \(X\) has the complete continuity property CCP if every bounded linear operator \(T:L_1 (0,2\pi)\to X\) is completely continuous (= maps weakly convergent sequences into norm convergent ones). The objective of the paper under review is, qualitatively spoken, to characterize the CCP in terms of Cauchy-ness of radial limits of certain harmonic functions into \(X\), the range of certain \(X\)-valued measures \(\mu\), and compactness of operators naturally corresponding to \(\mu\). More precisely, the following statements are equivalent: (i) \(X\) has the CPP. (ii) For every \(1<p<\infty\), for every \(f\in h^p(D,X)\) and \(r_n\uparrow 1\), the sequence \((f_{r_n})\) defined by \(f_{r_n}(t)=f(r_ne^{it}), t\in [0,2\pi]\), is \(p\)-Pettis-Cauchy. (iii) For every \(1<p<\infty\), each countably additive \(X\)-valued measure of bounded \(p\)-variation on \([0,2\pi]\) has relatively compact range. (iv) For every \(1<p<\infty\), for each countably additive \(X\)-valued measure \(\mu\) as in (iii) the operator \(T_\mu :L_q (0,2\pi)\to X\) defined by \(T_\mu (\varphi) =\int_0^{2\pi}\varphi\, d\mu\) is compact. Here, as usual, \(1/p+1/q=1\). Moreover, statements (ii)--(iv) become true as soon as one of them is true for some \(1<p<\infty\). All the concepts involved are explained on the first three pages of the paper, here also connections to earlier works are given. The main step in the proof of the equivalences above is the establishment of a slightly more general version of the equivalence between (i) and (ii).
