An important theorem of \textit{S.-Y. Chang} and \textit{D. Marshall} [Am. J. Math. 107, 1015--1033 (1985; Zbl 0578.30010)] asserts that for the holomorphic functions \(f\) on the open unit disk such that \(f(0)=0\) and \(|f'|^2\) has area integral one, the integrals \(\int_{|\zeta|=1}\exp(|f(\zeta)|^2)|\mathrm{d}\zeta|\) form a bounded set (the boundary values exist almost everywhere on the unit circle because these functions must belong to the Hardy space). The same statement about the integrals \(\int_{|\zeta|=1}\exp(\alpha|f(\zeta)|^2)|\mathrm{d}\zeta|\) for each fixed \(\alpha<1\) is what the present authors call the weak Chang-Marshall inequality (for \(\alpha>1\) the statement is false). The authors provide a direct proof of the latter using only elementary analysis, the Green's formula and the reproducing kernel of the Dirichlet space. They further describe how their method proves a related result and discuss its limitations regarding the original case \(\alpha=1\). Finally they call attention to related results established using similar methods by \textit{A. Aleman} and \textit{A.-M. Simbotin} [Complex Variables, Theory Appl. 49, No. 7-9, 487--510 (2004; Zbl 1076.30037)].
