The authors study the structure of positive solutions \(u\in C^{1}\left[ -1,1 \right] \cap C^{2}\left( -1,1\right) \) of the nonlinear boundary value problem \[ \left( \varphi _{p}(u^{\prime }(x))\right) ^{\prime }+\lambda \sum_{i=1}^{m}a_{i}u^{q_{i}}+\sum_{j=1}^{n}b_{j}u^{r_{j}}=0,\quad -1<x<1,\quad u(-1)=u(1)=0, \] where \(p>1,\quad \varphi _{p}(y)=\left| y\right| ^{p-2}y,\quad \lambda \) is a bifurcation parameter. Under suitable conditions on the coefficients it is proven that there exists a \( \lambda ^{\ast }>0\) such that for \(0<\lambda <\lambda ^{\ast }\) the problem has exactly two solutions, for \(\lambda =\lambda ^{\ast }\) there is one solution and for \(\lambda >\lambda ^{\ast }\) there is no solution.
