Let \(f\) be a real multivariate function with finite jump discontinuities in an open set of \(\mathbb{R}^n\), \(n> 0\). Usually, the first stage in the process or the approximation of \(f\) is the localization of these discontinuities. The paper presents a method for this localization which is based on the behaviour of sequences related to the gradients of discrete least-squares polynomial approximations of \(f\). An application to fault detection is also given.
