The Salce's cotorsion theory for abelian groups is generalized to any abelian category \({\mathcal C}\). Under some conditions, a contorsion pair \((A,B)\) of \({\mathcal C}\) (i.e., a pair of classes of objects orthogonal with respect to \(\text{Ext}^1_{\mathcal C}\)) may induce two natural homological model structures on the chain complex category \(\text{Ch}({\mathcal C})\). Examples are studied (Grothendieck categories, modules, complexes of schemes) and show the interest of the theory.
