From the authors' summary: The Riesz transform associated with the differential operator \(L_\lambda f(\theta)=- f''(\theta)- 2\lambda\,\text{cot}'\theta+ \lambda^2 f(\theta)\) is investigated. The ultraspherical polynomials are the eigenfunctions of \(L_\lambda\). The authors show that it can be defined as a principal value and that it is bounded on \(L^p([0,\pi],\sin^{2\lambda}\theta\,d\theta)\) for every \(1< p<\infty\) and of weak type \((1, 1)\). The same boundedness properties hold for the maximal operator of the truncated operators. A multiplier theorem is proved to get the boundedness of the conjugate function studied by \textit{B. Muckenhoupt} and \textit{E. M. Stein} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 118, 17--92 (1965; Zbl 0139.29002)] for \(1< p<\infty\) as a corollary of the results for the Riesz transform.
