A substitution \(\sigma\) on a finite alphabet \(A\) is called \textit{almost primitive} if there is a unique symbol \(a\in A\) with \(\sigma(a)=a^p\) for some \(p\in\mathbb N\); there is some \(n\in\mathbb N\) for which any \(b\in A\) appears in \(\sigma^n(c)\) for any \(c\in A\setminus\{a\}\); and \(a^k\) lies in the language produced by the substitution for each \(k\in\mathbb N\). In this paper some of the basic dynamical properties of the subshift associated to such a substitution are developed. It is shown that any almost primitive substitution gives rise to an almost minimal subshift, and that the nonatomic invariant measures which are finite on each closed and open set disjoint from the unique fixed point are unique (up to scaling) and ergodic.
