The paper deals with the solvability of the Dirichlet problem \[ u''(t)=f(u)(t) \quad\text{for~}t\in [a,b], \qquad u(a)=0, \qquad u(b)=0,\tag{1} \] where \(f:C([a,b];R)\to L([a,b];R)\) is a continuous operator. The authors obtain new efficient conditions sufficient for the solvability of (1), which are unimprovable in a certain sense. They use the method of a priori estimates and impose one-sided constraints on the operator \(f\). The equations with deviating arguments are also investigated in the paper as a special case of (1). The results are focused on equations the right-hand side of which can be expressed in terms of concentrated operators. An example of such an operator is \(f(u)(t)\overset{def}{=}p(t)u(\tau(t))+f_1(u)(t)\) with \(\tau(t)\in A\subset [a,b]\) for \(t\in [a,b]\).
