In algebraic \(K\)-theory, there is a coniveau (à Brown-Gersten-Quillen) spectral sequence converging to the algebraic \(K\)-groups of a smooth variety \(X\) over a base field \(F\) [see \textit{D. Quillen}, Lect. Notes Math. 341, 85--147 (1973; Zbl 0292.18004) and \textit{J. L. Colliot-Thélène, R. T. Hoobler} and \textit{B. Kahn}, ``The Bloch-Ogus-Gabber theorem'', Fields. Inst. Commun. 16, 31--94 (1997; Zbl 0911.14004)]. The article under review establishes an analogous spectral sequence converging to hermitian \(K\)-theory \(KO_*(X)\) if \(F\) is infinite. It is shown that in the \(E_2\)-term of this spectral sequence the oriented Chow groups of \textit{J. Barge} and \textit{F. Morel} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris Sér. I, Math. 330, No. 4, 287--290 (2000; Zbl 1017.14001)] appear and that the hermitian Gersten complex which is part of the \(E_1\)-term is a resolution of the Zariski sheafification of \(KO_*\) (thus the ``Gersten conjecture'' for hermitian \(K\)-theory holds for essentially smooth local algebras over an infinite field). The proofs rely on the \(A^1\)-representability and periodicity results for \(KO\) established in \textit{J. Hornbostel} [``\(A^1\)-representability of hermitian \(K\)-theory and Witt groups'', Topology 44, No. 3, 661--687 (2005; Zbl 1078.19004)]. The second part of the article applies Levine's homotopy coniveau spectral sequence [\textit{M. Levine}, J. Topol. 1, No. 1, 217--267 (2008; Zbl 1154.14005)] to hermitian \(K\)-theory, in particular discussing how higher oriented Chow groups conjecturally appear in the \(E_1\)-term of this spectral sequence.
