Let \(\mathfrak a\) denote an ideal of a commutative ring \(R.\) Let \(M\) be a finitely generated \(R\)-module. \textit{L. Melkerson} and the reviewer [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 117, No. 4, 935--938 (1993; Zbl 0780.13003)] asked whether the set of associated prime ideals \(\text{Ass} \text{Ext}_R^i(R/\mathfrak a^j, M)\) becomes ultimatively stable for a fixed integer \(i\) and sufficiently large \(j.\) The paper under review provides a positive partial answers to this question. Among others the authors prove the following: Let \(n \geq 0\) an integer and suppose that \(\dim H^i_{\mathfrak a}(M) \leq s\) for all \(i \leq n.\) Then the prime ideals of \(\bigcap_{j > 0} \text{Ass} \text{Ext}_R^i(R/\mathfrak a^j, M)\) with dimension at least \(s\) is a finite set for all \(i \leq n.\) A corresponding result is true for all \(i < n\) if one replaces \(\text{Ass}\) by \(\text{Supp}.\) In fact, this provides a positive answer to the question above in the particular case that \(\text{Supp} H^i_{\mathfrak a}(M)\) is finite for all \(i < n.\) For the proof of the authors results he shows that \(\dim \text{Ext}_R^i(R/\mathfrak a^j, M) \leq s\) for all \(i < n.\) With their results the authors generalize several known particular cases.
