Let \(\mathbf{RS}_n\) stand for the variety generated by all completely [0]-simple semigroups satisfying \(x^2=x^{n+2}\) for a fixed positive integer \(n\). A subvariety of \(\mathbf{RS}_n\) is called exact if it is generated by a completely [0]-simple semigroup. The authors give some necessary and some sufficient conditions for exactness. Namely, if a subvariety \(\mathbf V\subseteq\mathbf{RS}_n\) is exact, then either (C1) \(\mathbf V\) contains the 5-element idempotent-generated 0-simple semigroup \(A_2\), or (C2) \(\mathbf V\) does not contain the 2-element zero semigroup, or (C3) \(\mathbf V\) contains the 5-element Brandt semigroup but does not contain a 4-element subsemigroup of \(A_2\). Conditions (C1) and (C2) are sufficient for exactness while (C3) is not. If one strengthens (C3) by adding that \(\mathbf V\) contains neither the 2-element left zero semigroup nor the 2-element right zero semigroup, one obtains a sufficient condition which, however, is not necessary. It is mentioned that in a forthcoming paper the third author presents conditions that are both necessary and sufficient.
