    This paper is devoted to the study of positive radial solutions of the singular semilinear elliptic equation \[ -\triangle u = f(x,u), \quad x \in B,\qquad u =0, \quad x \in \partial B. \] The inhomogeneous term is allowed to be a sign-changing function with a singularity at \(u =0\) and \(| x| = 1\). Assuming that {\parindent9mm \begin{itemize} \item[(\(A_1\))] there exists a constant \(L > 0\) such that for every compact set \(e \subset [0,1)\), there exists an \(\varepsilon = \varepsilon_e > 0\) such that \(f(t,u) > L\) for all \(t \in e\) and \(u \in (0,\varepsilon]\), and; \item[(\(A_2\))] for any \(\delta > 0\) there exists an \(h_{\delta} \in L^1(0,1)\) such that \(|f(t,u)| \leq h_{\delta}\) for \(t \in [0,1)\) and \(u \geq \delta\), \end{itemize}} it is shown that the Dirichlet problem has at least one positive solution. The main technique is the method of upper and lower solutions applied to auxiliary boundary value problems.
