Let \(\alpha\in [0,1]\setminus \mathbb Q\) and let \(T_{\alpha}\) be the operator on \(L^2([0,1],dx)\) defined by \(T_{\alpha}(f)(x)=xf(\{x-\alpha\})\) where the curly bracket denotes fractional part. E.\,Bishop proposed \(T_{\alpha}\) as a candidate for an operator without nontrivial subspaces. Although \textit{A.\,M.\thinspace Davie} [Bull.\ Lond.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 6, 343--348 (1974; Zbl 0287.47003)] proved that this is not the case whenever \(\alpha\) is in a certain set of measure \(1\), the so-called Bishop operators have turned out to be very interesting; see, for instance, [\textit{G.\,W.\thinspace MacDonald}, J.~Funct.\ Anal.\ 91, No.\,2, 287--311 (1990; Zbl 0727.47002)]. Let us call a vector \(\alpha=(\alpha_1, \dots,\alpha_n)\) irrational if \(1, \alpha_1, \dots,\alpha_n\) are linear independent over \(\mathbb Q\). Let \(\tau_{\alpha}\) be defined by \(\tau_{\alpha}((x_1,\dots,x_n))=(\{x_1-\alpha_1\},\dots,\{x_n-\alpha_n\})\) for \(x=(x_1,\dots,x_n)\in [0,1]^n\). The weighted composition operator \(T_{w,\tau_{\alpha}}\) on \(L^2([0,1]^n,dx_1\dots dx_n)\) is defined by \(T_{w,\tau_{\alpha}}(f)(x)=w(x)f(\tau_{\alpha}x),\) with the weight \(w\in L^{\infty}([0,1]^n,dx_1\dots dx_n)\). The authors' main result is the following generalization of a theorem in Davie's paper. Theorem. Let \(\alpha\) be an irrational vector and let the weight \(w(x)=\prod_{j=1}^nw_j(x_j)\) be such that each \(w_j\) is nondecreasing, nonnegative and convex with \(w_j(0)=0.\) Then \(T_{w,\tau_{\alpha}}\) has no eigenvalues. The paper under review (as well as the other two papers mentioned) has as a reference the classical book by \textit{G.\,H.\thinspace Hardy} and \textit{E.\,M.\thinspace Wright} [``An introduction to the theory of numbers'' (Oxford:\ Clarendon Press) (\(^5\)1979; Zbl 0423.10001)].
