Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(k\) a field of characteristic \(p>0\). \textit{D. J. Benson, J. F. Carlson} and \textit{J. Rickard} [in Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 120, No. 4, 597-615 (1996; Zbl 0888.20003)] had constructed, for every homogeneous prime ideal \(\mathfrak p\) of the cohomology ring \(H^*(G,k)\), an (infinitely generated) idempotent \(kG\)-module \(\kappa_{\mathfrak p}\). \textit{D. J. Benson} and \textit{J. P. C. Greenlees} [in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 212, No. 7, 1716-1743 (2008; Zbl 1161.20005)] showed that, up to a dimension shift, the Tate cohomology \(\widehat H^*(G,\kappa_{\mathfrak p})\) is isomorphic to the injective hull of \(H^*(G,k)/\mathfrak p\) in the category of graded \(H^*(G,k)\)-modules. Here the author gives a new short proof of this result, by reducing it to the case where \(H^*(G,k)\) is Cohen-Macaulay. He also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of both proofs.
