Let \(C=C([-r,0];\mathbb{R}^n)\) be the Banach space of continuous functions from \([-r,0]\) to \(\mathbb{R}^n\) \((r>0)\) with the usual supremum norm. Consider retarded functional differential equations of the type \[ dx(t)/dt=Bx(t)+L(x_t)+f(t,x_t)t \geq 0\quad\text{with initial conditions of the form }x_0=\varphi, \tag{*} \] where \(x_t\in C\) is defined as \(x_t(s)=x (t+s)\), \(B\in M_n\) is a \(n\times n\) real matrix, \(L:C \to\mathbb{R}^n\) is defined by the formula \[ L(\varphi)=\int^0_{-r}d\eta(\theta) \varphi (\theta) \] with a bounded variation map \(\eta:[-r,0]\to M_n\) and \(f: \mathbb{R} \times C\to\mathbb{R}^n\) is continuous. There are considered in particular linear equations (with \(f=0)\). The authors study (*) by using the integrated semigroup theory. Such an approach suggests to reformulate (*) as an abstract non-densely defined Cauchy problem. The first step in that way is to regard (*) as a Cauchy problem for some partial differential equation. The main results of the paper derive explicit formulae for the projectors on the generalized eigenspaces associated to suitable eigenvalues for linear equations. The results are useful in studying bifurcations in certain semi-linear problems.
