Let \(G\) be a real simple algebraic connected non-compact Lie group, \(K\) a maximal compact subgroup of \(G\) and \((\pi,\mathcal H)\) an irreducible unitary representation. If \(v\) is a \(K\)-finite vector in \(\mathcal H\), then a classical theorem of Nelson implies that the orbit map \(G\to \mathcal H, g\mapsto \pi(g)v\) can be extended holomorphically to a neighborhood of \(G\) in \(G_{\mathbb C}\). The author studies the question whether one can determine a maximal left \(G\)- and right \(K_{\mathbb C}\)-invariant domain on which such an extension can be defined for all \(K\)-finite vectors simultaneously. He proves the surprising fact that indeed such a domain can be found in a rather universal way. More precisely, unless the representation is trivial or has an extremal weight, this domain turns out to be always the Akhiezer-Gindikin domain \(\Xi\) which is also called the \textit{complex crown}. For representations with extremal weight, which exist only for groups of Hermitian type, one also has universal domains \(\Xi^\pm\) (for highest, resp. lowest weight representations), which can be constructed in terms of maximal systems of strictly orthogonal roots. The author also shows that in all cases these domains can be characterized as the maximal \(G\times K_\mathbb C\)-invariant domains on which the \(G\)-action is proper. The proofs heavily rely on the detailed analysis of the geometric structure of \(G\times K_\mathbb C\)-invariant domains undertaken by the author, together with various co-authors, in a number of papers.
