The author considers the group \(G^0(X)\) of the invertible classical pseudodifferential operators of order zero on a compact manifold \(X\). The homotopy groups \(\pi_k(G^0(X))\) are computed in terms of the \(K\)-theory of the cosphere bundle \(S^*X\). Also, the author shows that the subgroup of the invertible operators of the form \(I+ K\), with \(K\) a pseudodifferential operator of order \(-1\), is weakly retractible in \(G^0(X)\). The results of the author have interesting applications, mainly concerning the index of pseudodifferential operators with symbol vector-valued in \(G^0(X)\). As an example, the author computes the index for the fibred cusp-operators of \textit{R. Mazzeo} and \textit{R. B. Melrose} [Asian J. Math. 2, No. 4, 833--866 (1998; Zbl 1125.58304)].
