The author considers extensions of the type \(\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_m,\root m\of{a})/\mathbb{Q}\) where \(m\) is an odd integer, \(\zeta_m\) is a primitive \(m\)th root of unity and \(a\) is an integer. It is also assumed that \(p\nmid\upsilon_p(a)\) or \(\upsilon_p(a)\geq\upsilon_p(m)\) for all primes \(p\) dividing \(m\). The two goals of the article are the calculation of the higher ramification groups of the extension and the determination of the Artin conductor of the characters of the Galois group of the extension. To calculate the ramification groups, one passes to the completion with respect to the \(p\)-adic valuation. This reduces to the study of local extensions \(\mathbb{Q}_p(\zeta_{p^r},\root{p^r}\of{a})\) of \(\mathbb{Q}_p\). In determining the Artin conductor of the characters of the Galois group of the extension, the author reduces to the case \(m= p^r\). He then looks at the restriction of the character to the ramification groups in order to determine the local Artin conductor. As a by product the author also determines the power of \(p\) dividing the discriminant of the extension. \textit{H. Koch} and \textit{E. de Shalit} [J. Angew. Math. 478, 85--106 (1996; Zbl 0858.11061)] have studied the ramification groups of maximal metabelian extensions of local fields of which radical extensions are a particular case. To compare the results one would need to compute the image of the norm map, which is difficult to do. The advantage of the method used here is that explicit results are obtained without the use of local class field theory.
