In [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér., IV. Sér. 35, No. 5, 749--758 (2002; Zbl 1028.58010)], \textit{A.~Navas } showed that if \(\Gamma\) is any (countable) discrete group with Kazhdan's property (T), and \(\phi : \Gamma \to \text{Diff}^{1+\alpha}(S^1)\) is any homomorphism into the group of \(C^{1+\alpha}\) diffeomorphisms of the circle, with \(\alpha > 1/2\), then \(\phi(\Gamma)\) is finite. In this paper, the author introduces the relative Kazdan property (T) for a pair \((\Gamma,\Gamma_ 0)\), where \(\Gamma_ 0\) is a subgroup of \(\Gamma\). It is shown that if \(\Gamma_ 0\) is a subgroup of a discrete group \(\Gamma\) such that \((\Gamma,\Gamma_ 0)\) possesses the relative Kazdan property (T), and \(\phi: \Gamma \to \text{Diff}^{1+\alpha}(S^1)\) is any homomorphism into the group of \(C^{1+\alpha}\) diffeomorphisms of the circle, with \(\alpha > 1/2\), then \(\phi(\Gamma_ 0)\) is finite. Moreover, the author studies properties concerning actions of an irreducible lattice \(\Gamma\) in a semisimple connected Lie group \(G\) of \({\mathbb R}\)-rank greater or equal 2 by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the circle \(S^1\).
