    Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be left Banach modules over a unital \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\). Let \(m\), \(n\) and \(k\) be integers with \(1 < m < k < mn\) and \(x_1\), \(x_2, \dots, x_{mn} \in X\). For a given map \(f: X \to Y\), we put \[ \begin{multlined} Df(x_1, x_2, \dots, x_{mn}) =\\ mn {}_{mn-2}C_{k-2} f\left( \frac{x_1 + \cdots + x_{mn}}{mn} \right)+ {}_{mn-2}C_{k-1} \sum_{i=1}^{mn} f\left( \frac{x_i + \cdots + x_{i+m-1}}{m}\right)\\ -k \sum_{1 \leq i_1 < \cdots < i_k \leq mn} f\left( \frac{x_{i_1} + \cdots + x_{i_k}}{k}\right),\end{multlined} \tag \(*\) \] where \(x_{mn+1} = x_1\), \(x_{mn+2} = x_2, \dots, x_{mn+m-1} = x_{m-1}\). A map \(f : X \to Y\) is a generalized Trif's mapping if \(Df(x_1, x_2, \dots, x_{mn}) = 0\) for every \(x_1\), \(x_2, \dots, x_{mn} \in X\). In fact, the case where \(m = 1\) was studied by \textit{T.~Trif} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 272, 604--616 (2002; Zbl 1036.39021)]. In this paper under review the author proves (generalized) Hyers-Ulam stability of Trif's equation: Let \(\varphi:X^{mn} \to [0, \infty)\) be a map (with a certain condition). If a map \(f:X \to Y\) with \(f(0) = 0\) satisfies \(\| Df(x_1, x_2, \dots, x_{mn}) \| \leq \varphi(x_1, x_2, \dots, x_{mn})\) for every \(x_1\), \(x_2, \dots, x_{mn} \in X\), then there exists a unique generalized Trif's mapping \(T:X \to Y\) and a map \(\widetilde{\varphi}: X \to [0, \infty)\) such that \(\| f(x) - T(x) \| \leq \widetilde{\varphi}(x)\) for all \(x \in X\). Under an additional condition, the author also proves that \(T\) is \(A\)-linear, that is, \(T(ax + by) = aT(x) + bT(y)\) for all \(a, b \in A\) and \(x, y \in X\). This result is applied to the study of stability of \(C^*\)-algebra homomorphisms.
