A bounded linear operator \(T\) on an infinite-dimensional Banach space \(X\) is said to determine the complete norm topology of \(X\) whenever every complete norm \(| \cdot| \) on \(X\) making the operator \(T\) continuous from \((X,| \cdot| )\) into \((X,| \cdot| )\) is automatically equivalent to the original norm on \(X\). As their main result, the authors prove that a non-injective Riesz operator on \(X\) does not have this property. In contrast to the above, a bounded injective operator with trivial generalized range does have it. The simple example of a weighted right shift operator then shows that the assumption of non-injectivity is not superfluous.
