This paper deals with local real analyticity of the solutions of quasilinear partial differential equations whose linearizations have a symplectic characteristic variety of codimension 2. A detailed study is proposed for the following model case of a sum of squares of nonlinear vector fields: \[ P_u= (D^2_x+ x^{2r} h(u,x,t)D^2_t) u= f \] with a positive definite, real analytic function \(h\). It is proved in Theorem 1 that each \(C^{2+\alpha}\) smooth solution \(u\) is real analytic where \(f\) is. The techniques used in the proof are new even in this special case.
