The exponential integral \(E_1(z)\) equals \(-\gamma-\ln z+ z_2F_2[1,1;2,2;-z]\), where \(\gamma\) is the Euler-Mascheroni constant. To obtain an expansion in terms of the incomplete Gamma function \(\gamma(\alpha, z)= \alpha^{-1}z^\alpha_1F_1[\alpha; \alpha+1;-z]\), the authors first establish, by series manipulations, an expansion of \[ {_{p+1}F_{q+1}}\left[\begin{matrix}\alpha/N,(\alpha_p);\\ (\alpha+ N)/N,(\beta_q);\end{matrix}\,\omega\Biggl({-z\over N}\Biggr)^N\right]. \] The expansion is too long to reproduce here; its general term involves \(\gamma(\alpha+ n,z)\). A special case is \[ z^\alpha{_2 F_2}[\alpha,\lambda; \alpha+1,\mu; -z]= \alpha \sum^\infty_{n=0} {(\mu- \lambda)_n\over(\mu)_n} {\gamma(\alpha+ n,z)\over n!}, \] which in turn applies to \(E_1(z)\). In this way the authors have generalized recent results by \textit{W. Gautschi}, \textit{F. E. Harris} and \textit{N. M. Temme} [Appl. Math. Lett. 16, No. 7, 1095--1099 (2003; Zbl 1058.33002)]. The authors mention briefly the connection with derivatives \(\partial I_\nu/\partial\nu\), and with an expansion of \(I_\nu(z)\) in terms of \(\gamma(\nu+ n+{1\over 2},2z)\) due to Hadamard; \(I_\nu(z)\) denotes the modified Bessel function.
