Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(C\) be the largest possible order of an element in \(G\). The authors now prove that if \(G\) does not have a chief factor isomorphic to \(E_8(q)\), then there are at most two primes \(p\) properly between \(|C|/2\) and \(|C|\) such that \(p\) divides \(|G|\). -- The proof depends on the prime graph and the classification of finite simple groups. -- For \(E_8(q)\) the authors give examples for \(q\) with 3 primes and also with 4 primes in that range.
