Let \(p\geq 1\). A Banach space \(X\) is said to have the \(p\)-BS-property if each weakly null sequence \((x_n)\subset X\) contains a subsequence \((y_k)\) for which the sequence \(m^{-1/p}\| \sum_1^my_k\| \) is bounded. The set \(\Gamma(X)= \{p\geq 1: X\) has \(p\)-BS-property\(\}\) is called the index set of \(X\). Taking in the definition of index set pairwise disjoint sequences (independent random variables), we obtain the sets \(\Gamma_{\text{d}}(X)\) (resp., \(\Gamma_{\text{i}}(X)\)). The authors continue the study of the Banach--Saks index set in the class of separable rearrangement-invariant spaces on \([0,1]\) [see \textit{P.~G. Dodds, E.~M. Semenov} and \textit{F.~A. Sukochev}, Stud. Math. 162, 263--294 (2004; Zbl 1057.46016) and \textit{E.~M. Semenov} and \textit{F.~A. Sukochev} [Sb. Math. 195, 263--285 (2004; Zbl 1078.46010)]. They establish a connection of the index sets with the lower \(\alpha_X\) and upper \(\beta_X\) Boyd indices. In particular, they show: (a) If \(p\in (1,2]\), then \(p\in \Gamma(X)\Rightarrow \alpha_X>0\) and \(p\in \Gamma_{\text{i}}(X)\Rightarrow \beta_X\leq 1/p\). (b) If \(\alpha_X>1/2\), then \(\Gamma(X)=\Gamma_{\text{i}}(X)\). (c) If \(0<\alpha_X\leq \beta_X<1/p\), where \(p\in \Gamma_{\text{d}}(X)\), \(1<p\leq 2\), then \(p\in \Gamma(X)\). (d) The set \(\Gamma(X)\) is nontrivial if and only if the set \(\Gamma_{\text{d}}(X)\) and the Boyd indices of \(X\) are nontrivial. The authors also specialize these results to Lorentz, Marcinkiewicz and Orlicz spaces.
