The author demonstrates the application of the concordance method of asymptotic expansions to a Dirichlet Laplacian, considered in an \(n\)-dimensional bounded domain with a thin cylindrical appendix of finite length. For \(n\geq3\), he studies the construction of asymptotics with respect to a small parameter \(\varepsilon\) (which is the diameter of a cross-section of the appendix) for the eigenvalues \(\lambda^\varepsilon\) of the perturbed problem, which converge (\(\varepsilon\to 0\)) to a simple eigenvalue of the limit problem and also obtains explicit formulas for first perturbed terms. Convergence of solutions and eigenfunctions of the perturbed boundary-value problem to those of the limit problem is, in particular, considered. For \(n= 2\), the author gives a detailed asymptotic analysis which, in particular, implies that all eigenvalues of the limit problem converging to a multiple eigenvalue of the limit problem appear to be simple. The concordance method is applied because the regular perturbation theory, described, for instance, in the book of T. Kato, cannot be considered for the studied Laplacian, since an attempt to reduce the problem to a problem in a fixed domain by using a change of variables generates a singularly-perturbed operator.
