There are two different definitions of developable varieties in algebraic geometry: (A) varieties with degenerate Gauss map; (B) ruled varieties whose tangent spaces are constant on each leaf. Here the author studies them in positive characteristic. He gives a characteristic free criterion for property (B) and gives an example with (A), but not (B). He also studies focal loci in positive characteristic.
