Let \((S_n,S)\) be the Coxeter system of the symmetric group \(S_n\) with \(S\) the standard generator set. Let \(\mathcal H\) be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group \(S_n\) defined over the polynomial ring \({\mathcal A}=\mathbb{Z}[\xi]\) in an indeterminate \(\xi\). Let \(\Lambda_n\) be the set of partitions of \(n\). There are two \(\mathcal A\)-bases in the center of \(\mathcal H\), one is \(\{b_\alpha\mid \alpha\in\Lambda_n\}\), constructed by the second-named author [in Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 317, No. 1, 361-392 (1990; Zbl 0691.20033)] by using norms over \(\mathbb{Q}[\xi]\) (called the norm basis), and the other is \(\{\Gamma_\alpha\mid\alpha\in\Lambda_n\}\), the analogues of the class sum basis for the center of the group algebra (called the minimal basis) [see \textit{M. Geck} and \textit{R. Rouquier}, Prog. Math. 141, 251-272 (1997; Zbl 0868.20013)]. The main result of the present paper is to give an explicit transition formula between these two bases as follows. \(b_\alpha=\sum_{\lambda\in\Lambda_n} (1_{S_\lambda})^{S_n}(w_\alpha)\xi^{l_\lambda-l_\alpha}\Gamma_\lambda\) for any \(\alpha\in\Lambda_n\), where \(w_\alpha\in S_n\) is an element of cycle type \(\alpha\), \(l_\alpha\) is the length of the minimal elements in the conjugacy class of \(S_n\) containing \(w_\alpha\), and \((1_{S_\lambda})^{S_n}\) is the permutation character of \(S_n\) arising from the induction to \(S_n\) of the trivial character on the parabolic subgroup \(S_\lambda\).
