A Tychonoff space \(X\) is metrizably fibered provided that there exists a continuous map \(f: X\to Y\) onto a metrizable space \(Y\) such that for each \(y\in Y\), \(f^{-1}(y)\) is metrizable. \textit{V. V. Tkachuk} [Topol. Proc. 19, 321--334 (1994; Zbl 0854.54022)] asked the following questions: (1) Suppose that each continuous first countable image of a compact space \(X\) is metrizably fibered. Must \(X\) be perfectly normal? (2) Is every continuous image of the lexicographic square metrizably fibered? In the paper under review the authors answer question (2) by showing that every first countable Hausdorff space \(X\) that is the continuous image of the lexicographic square is metrizably fibered. They also note that a construction of \textit{S. Mardešić} and \textit{P. Papić} [Period. Math.-Phys. Astron., II. Ser. 17, 3--22 (1963; Zbl 0119.17906)] resolves question (1). The interesting related question (Problem 3.3, \textit{V. Tkachuk} [loc. cit.]) whether each first countable continuous image of a metrizably fibered compact space is metrizably fibered remains open.
