Let \(\mathcal{M}\) be a closed linear subspace of a separable Hilbert space \(\mathcal{X}\), \(\Omega=\{x_{n}\}\) be a countable orthogonal basis of \(\mathcal{M}\) (\(\dim \mathcal{M}\leq\infty\)). A linear operator \(A:\mathcal{M}\mapsto \mathcal{M}\) is called \(l_{p}\)-diagonally dominant (\(l_{p}\)-d.d.) with respect to \(\Omega\) if \(| (Ax_{m},x_{m})| ^{p}\geq\sum_{n\neq m}| (Ax_{m},x_{n})| ^{p}\) (\(1\leq p<\infty\)) or \(| (Ax_{m},x_{m})| \geq \sup_{m\neq n}| (Ax_{m},x_{n})| \) (\(p=\infty\)). The existence of symmetric linear operators that are \(l_{p}\)-d.d. with respect to any basis of \(\mathcal{X}\) is discussed. Also, properties of these operators and their characterization in terms of their spectra are investigated.
