A Banach space is said to satisfy the \textit{Daugavet property} if every one-dimensional operator \(S:X\rightarrow X\) satisfies the \textit{Daugavet equation:} \(\| I + S\| =1+\| S\| \). An operator \(T:X\rightarrow X\) is said to be narrow if given \(x,y\) in the unit sphere \(S_X\), \(x^*\in X^*\) and \(\varepsilon >0\), there is \(z\in S_X\) such that \(\| x+z\| \geq 2-\varepsilon\) and \(\| T(y-z)\| +| x^*(y-z)| \leq \varepsilon\). It is well-known that \(X\oplus_1Y\) and \(X\oplus_\infty Y\) have the Daugavet property when \(X\) and \(Y\) have it. Here, among other results, it is shown that an operator on \(X\oplus_1Y\) or \(X\oplus_\infty Y\) is narrow if and only if the restrictions to \(X\) and \(Y\) are narrow, some characterizations are obtained for the Daugavet property for ultraproducts of Banach spaces with respect to a countably incomplete ultrafilter, and a Banach lattice version of the Daugavet property is studied.
