Let \(L\) be a free Lie algebra over an arbitrary field, \(I,J\) any non-zero proper ideals of \(L\). The author proves that if \(I+J\neq L\), then \([I,J]\) is not finitely generated as an ideal. Moreover, the dimension of the Schur multiplier of the quotient \(L/[I,J]\) is infinite. On the other hand, if \(I+J=L\) and \(I,J\) are finitely generated ideals, then \([I,J]\) is a finitely generated ideal. The author gives an example of an ideal \(I\) that is not finitely generated as an ideal, yet \([I,L]\) is finitely generated. The results are parallel to those obtained for the group case by the author and \textit{S. Rosset} [J. Pure Appl.\ Algebra 198, No. 1--3, 1--8 (2005; Zbl 1110.20027)].
