The author deals with a class of Baer *-rings defined by nine axioms, a class which was previously considered by \textit{S. K. Berberian} [Baer *-rings. Die Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften in Einzeldarstellungen. Band 195. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1972; Zbl 0242.16008)] and \textit{L. Vaš} [J. Algebra 289, No. 2, 614-639 (2005; see the preceding review Zbl 1119.16033)]. The main result of the paper shows that the ninth axiom follows from the first seven. This gives an affirmative answer to the following question of S. K. Berberian: if a Baer *-ring \(R\) satisfies the first seven axioms, is the matrix ring \(M_n(R)\) a Baer *-ring?
