Springer fibers arise as fibers in Springer's resolution of singularities of the nilpotent variety for a Lie algebra Lie\((G)\) of a semisimple complex algebraic group \(G\). For \(G\) in a conjecture of D. Kazdan and G. Lusztig amounts to the irreducibility of certain characteristic varieties in the Springer fibers. The Springer fibers are reducible in general, and the main motivation for the present article is the determination, in terms of Young tableaux, of a pair of irreducible components with intersections in codimension 1. In this article the authors describe constructions of N. Spaltenstein and R. Steinberg, and show that, on the level of intersections, the components of Springer fibre and orbital varieties are the same object. They also manage to give sufficient conditions for the intersection to be of codimension 1.
