Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of char. \(0\). A polynomial \(f(X, Y)\) in \(k[X, Y]\) is generally rational if the curve \(\{f=\lambda\}\) is an irreducible, rational curve for all but finitely many \(\lambda\in k\). The morphism \(f: \mathbb{A}^2\to\mathbb{A}^1\) can be extended to a proper morphism \(\Phi: X\to\mathbb{P}^1\), where \(X\) is a smooth compactification of \(\mathbb{A}^2\). Then \(X- \mathbb{A}^2\) contains irreducible components \(\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2,\dots, \Gamma_n\) such that \(\Phi: \Gamma_i\to \mathbb{P}^1\) is onto and any other irreducible component of \(X- \mathbb{A}^2\) maps to a point. Previously, \textit{H. Saito} [Osaka J. Math. 9, 293--332 (1972; Zbl 0248.32005); ibid. 17, 339--362 (1980; Zbl 0457.13006)] and later \textit{M. Miyanishi} and \textit{T. Sugie} [Osaka J. Math 17, 339--362 (1980; Zbl 0457.13006)] gave polynomial forms for \(f\) when all the \(\Gamma_i\) are cross-sections for \(\Phi\). In the present paper the author has classified all possible forms for \(f\) when exactly one \(\Gamma_i\) is a \(2\)-section and all the other \(\Gamma_j\)'s are cross-sections. Results of this type are clearly valuable for workers in the area of surface theory. The list of forms of \(f\) is too long to be given here. The proof uses knowledge of smooth compactifications of \(\mathbb{C}^2\) due to \textit{C. P. Ramanujam} [Ann. Math. (2) 94, 69--88 (1971; Zbl 0218.14021)] and \textit{J. A. Morrow} [Rice Univ. Studies 59, No. 1, 97--112 (1973; Zbl 0277.32019)].
