Many varieties of lattices with nonsurjective epimorphisms (Q2491960)

The authors use dominions to show that varieties of lattices have nonsurjective epimorphisms. The variety \(D\) of distributive lattices is treated in detail. They show that the dominion in \(D\) of sublattice \(M \subseteq L\) is the closure of \(M\) under the relative complementation in \(L\). This dominion is also the largest sublattice of \(L\) in which \(M\) is epimorphically embedded. The authors demonstrate several techniques using dominions for finding nonsurjective epimorphisms in any varieties of lattices.
