The present paper is devoted to the invertibility of convolution type operators on a finite interval in the frame of Bessel potential spaces. Such operators arise in studying wave diffraction problems with reactance and Dirichlet conditions on a strip. Excluding one variable due to perpendicular wave incidence, the authors obtain a boundary-transmission (or the Dirichlet) problem for the Helmholtz equation, which is then reduced to a convolution type operator on Bessel potential spaces on a finite interval. Applying several matrix operator identities connecting such convolution type operators and matrix Wiener--Hopf operators, and factorizing the corresponding semi-almost periodic matrix symbols, the authors study the Fredholmness and invertibility of the convolution type operators associated with diffraction problems on a strip.
