Let \(G\) be a simply connected, bounded domain in \(C\) and let \(\Gamma\) be its topological boundary. As usual, \(P(\overline G)\) denotes the algebra of all functions continuous on \(\overline G\) that can be uniformly approximated on \(\overline G\) by polynomials in \(z\) and \(P (\Gamma) = \{f : f = q|_{\Gamma }\), \(q \in P (\overline G)\}\). Recall that \(G\) is a Carathéodory domain if \(\Gamma\) coincides with the outer boundary \(\Gamma_\infty\) of \(G;\) that is the topological boundary of the unbounded connected component of \(C \backslash \overline G\). Finally let \(\omega\) denote the harmonic measure on \(\Gamma\) with respect to a point \(a\in G\). In this interesting paper the author studies analoga of the Rudin-Carleson interpolation theorem and Wermer's maximality theorem for \(P (\overline G)\). It is shown that every non-empty closed set \(K \subseteq \Gamma\) with \(\omega (K) = 0\) is an interpolation set for \(P (\Gamma)\) if and only if \(G\) is a Carathéodory domain that does not separate the plane. Moreover, in that case, \(K \subseteq \Gamma\) is a peak set for \(P (\overline G)\) if and only if \(K\) is an interpolation set for \(P (\Gamma)\). It is also shown that these geometric conditions on \(G\) characterize those \(G\) with boundary \(\Gamma\) for which \(P (\Gamma)\) is a maximal closed subalgebra of \(C(\Gamma)\). The same conditions were known to characterize those \(G\)'s for which the F. and M. Riesz theorem holds [see \textit{A. A. Dovgoshej}, Anal. Math. 21, 165--175 (1995; Zbl 0838.30020)].
