Let \textbf{A} be the adele ring of a number field, and let \(\pi=\otimes \pi_v\) be an irreducible globally generic cuspidal automorphic representation of one of the split spin groups \(\text{ GSpin}_{2n+1}({\mathbf A})\), \(\text{ GSpin}_{2n}({\mathbf A})\). Then the authors show that there exists an automorphic representation \(\Pi=\otimes \Pi_v\) of \(\text{ GL}_{2n}({\mathbf A})\) such that for almost all places \(v\), \(\Pi_v\) is the functorial lift of \(\pi_v\) corresponding to the natural inclusion of the connected components of the respective \(L\)-groups. Moreover, the lifted representation \(\Pi\) is shown to be nearly equivalent to \(\widetilde{\Pi}\otimes \omega_\pi\), where \(\omega_\pi\) is the central character of \(\pi\). As special cases, when \(n=2\) this establishes the generic transfer from \(\text{ GSp}_4=\text{ GSpin}_5\) to \(\text{ GL}_4\), and when \(n=3\) it gives (a weak form of) the exterior square transfer from \(\text{ GL}_4\) to \(\text{ GL}_6\), due to \textit{H. Kim} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 16, 139--183 (2003; Zbl 1018.11024)]. The proof of this result is an application of the Converse Theorem of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro. Most of the hypotheses needed for this application may be checked using prior results of Gelbart, Kim, and Shahidi (in various combinations). The key hypothesis that remains, and is checked here, is that of the stability of gamma factors---that is, the stability of certain root numbers under twists by highly ramified characters. These gamma factors were expressed as Mellin transforms of certain Bessel functions by \textit{F. Shahidi} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2002, No. 39, 2075--2119 (2002; Zbl 1025.22014)]. The asymptotics of these Bessel functions near zero and infinity are developed here, and this allows the authors to prove the desired stability result. The theory of (twisted) endoscopy predicts that the automorphic representations \(\Pi\) of \(\text{ GL}_{2n}({\mathbf A})\) which are in the image of the transfer studied here satisfy \(\Pi\cong \widetilde{\Pi}\otimes \omega\) for some Hecke character \(\omega\). For a finite place \(v\) with \(\pi_v\) unramified, the authors show, using a result of \textit{J.-S. Li} [Math. Ann. 292, 747--761 (1992; Zbl 0804.22007)], that the local component \(\Pi_v\) of the above transfer is irreducible and unramified and satisifes \(\Pi_v\cong \widetilde{\Pi}_v\otimes \omega_\pi\). Moreover, if \(m\) is odd, then \(\Pi_v\) is generic. Generic functorial transfer for various quasi-split classical groups was established by \textit{J. W. Cogdell, H. H. Kim, I. I. Piatetski-Shapiro} and \textit{F. Shahidi} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 93, 5--30 (2001; Zbl 1028.11029), ibid. 99, 163--233 (2004; Zbl 1090.22010)] and \textit{H. H. Kim} and \textit{M. Krishnamurthy} [IMRP Int. Math. Res. Pap. 2005, No. 1, 1--52 (2005; Zbl 1146.11314)].
