Multipeaked localized stationary solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, corresponding to excited states of the discrete spectrum and corresponding to multi-breather solutions, are presented in one and two dimensions. The author follows an efficient method proposed by \textit{S. Aubry} [Physica D 71, No. 1--2, 196--221 (1994; Zbl 0807.58042)], which involves iterations of a map, starting from trivial solutions of the anti-continuous limit. After a summary of previous results concerning single-peaked stationary states [\textit{G. Kalosakas, S. Aubry} and \textit{G. P. Tsironis}, Phys. Rev. B 58, 3094 (1998)], the author presents aproximate analytical expressions for multipeaked stationary solutions of high symmetry, and compares them with numerical results. The linear stability of such steady states is discussed and the structure of the linear stability spectrum is obtained analytically for relatively large values of nonlinearity. It is seen, for instance, that symmetric and antisymmetric double peaks in one dimension show qualitatively different behavior regarding stability; double and quadruple peaks with different interpeak separation are studied in the two-dimensional lattice; for strong nonlinearities, the symmetric double-peaked states are unstable and the antisymmetric ones are linearly stable, except for positive nonlinearity and odd interpeak separation, where the situation is reversed. Comparison with previous works is presented.
