The paper presents a theoretical study of the intrinsic localized modes (ILM) in waveguides inside a two-dimensional photonic crystal which is a periodic array of infinitely long parallel axed dielectric cylinders of circular cross section arranged on a two-dimensional periodic lattice. Waveguides are formed in the photonic crystal by the replacement of a row of cylinders with cylinders having dielectric properties allowing them to bind electromagnetic modes propagating along the channel formed by the replacement cylinders. The emphasis in the paper is made on the replacement cylinders formed of both linear and Kerr nonlinear media in such a way that the waveguide channel is a periodic array of linear and Kerr nonlinear media, both of which differ from the linear bulk of the crystal. The scattering properties of waveguide systems, particularly, the transmission characteristics of a waveguide are studied. Transmission anomalies corresponding to two types of waveguide geometries, barriers and junctions, are identified. Potential applications for the ILMs of photonic crystal waveguides are discussed.
