Let \(X,Y\) be real normed spaces and \(n\geq 3\). The paper deals with the \textit{stability} of the functional equation \[ f\left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}x_i\right)+(n-2)\sum_{i=1}^{n}f(x_i)=\sum_{1\leq i<j\leq n}f(x_i+x_j),\qquad x_1,\ldots,x_n\in X.\tag{1} \] It is proved that for each mapping \(f:X\to Y\) which satisfies the above equation approximately (i.e., the norm of the difference of both sides of the equation is bounded by an appropriate mapping \(\varphi(x_1,\ldots,x_n)\)) and is approximately even (i.e., \(\| f(x)-f(-x)\| \leq \theta\) for all \(x\in X\) and with some fixed \(\theta\geq 0\)) there exists a unique quadratic mapping \(Q:X\to Y\) which satisfies (1) and is close to \(f\) (i.e., \(\| f(x)-Q(x)\| \) is bounded by an explicitly given function of \(x\)). Similarly, if \(f:X\to Y\) is an approximately odd (\(\| f(x)+f(-x)\| \leq\theta\)) approximate solution of the equation (1), then there exists a unique additive solution \(A:X\to Y\) of (1) which approximates \(f\). Moreover, some refinements are given under some regularity assumption upon \(f\).
