An eigenvalue problem corresponding to the prescribed mean curvature equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition is studied. A Ljusternik-Schnirelmann type theorem is obtained for a related variational inequality that leads to the existence of infinitely many eigenvalues and infinitely many eigenfunctions on each level of the area functional. This approach is developed in a space of functions of bounded variation.
