Let \(X\), \(Y\) be Banach spaces and let \(B_X\) denote the closed unit ball of \(X\). For \(\beta \in (0,1]\), a function \(g: B_X \to Y\) is called \(\beta\)-Hölder if there exists \(K>0\) such that \(\| g(x)-g(y)\| _Y \leq K\| x-y\| _X^\beta\) for all \(x,y \in B_X\). For \(f: B_X \to Y\), the possibility of arbitrarily close uniform approximations by \(\beta\)-Hölder functions is studied. If such approximations are possible for some \(\beta >0\), then they are obviously possible for any smaller \(\beta\). Let \(\alpha (B_X, Y)\) denote the supremum of \(\beta\) for which they are possible for every uniformly continuous function \(f: B_X \to Y\). Proceeding from some known results in the case \(X=l_p\), \(Y=l_q\), the author considers more general cases. For example, under some assumptions concerning \(X\) and \(Y\), the inequality \(\alpha (B_X, Y) \leq \alpha (B_{l_p}, Y)\) is proved. The relation between \(\alpha (B_X, Y)\) and the problem of isomorphic extension of Hölder maps is also considered.
