Let \(G\) denote a locally compact group. For every weight function \(\omega\colon G \to [1,\infty)\), the Beurling algebra \(L^1(G,\omega)\) is defined as the space of measurable functions \(\phi\) on \(G\) such that \(\omega\phi\in L^1(G)\); see the monograph by \textit{H. G. Dales } and \textit{A. T.-M. Lau} [The second duals of Beurling algebras. Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 836, 191 p. (2005; Zbl 1075.43003)] for detailed information about Beurling algebras. In the present paper Beurling algebras are equipped with certain locally convex topologies \(\tau\) which have the property that \((L^1(G,\omega),\tau)^\ast\) can be identified with the \(C^\ast\)-algebra \(L_0^\infty(G,1/\omega)\) (the algebra of measurable functions \(f\) that vanish at infinity such that \(f/\omega\in L^\infty(G)\)). Using this identification an Arens multiplication \(\bigodot\) is introduced on \((L^1(G,\omega),\tau)^{\ast\ast}\). The Banach algebras \((L^1(G,\omega),\tau)\) are shown to be strongly Arens irregular under this multiplication, that is, the mapping \(H \mapsto F \bigodot H\) is shown to be weak\(^\ast\)-weak\(^\ast\) continuous only if \(F\in L^1(G,\omega)\). This also shows that \((L^1(G,\omega),\tau)\) is Arens regular if and only if \(G\) is discrete, for in this case \((L^1(G,\omega),\tau)^{\ast\ast}=L^1(G,\omega)\). It follows that \((L^1(G,\omega),\tau)\) is Arens regular when the usual Beurling algebra is, the converse is shown to be false.
